I will never forget it. The first time that I ran 3 miles straight without walking. 3 months prior, the goal seemed unreachable. My BFF and I would meet at 5am to do the couch to 5k program. I dabbled in running before but this time was different. 12 weeks prior I had just given birth to my daughter Madeline. I needed to drop some weight and time to just be out of the house. Those cold February mornings were just what I needed. Not only did I drop the weight, I gained my confidence back. Being a new mom I often felt like I had no idea what I was doing. This running program was something that I could focus on as well as have control over. Running has been my outlet on many of occasions. When I have had a stressful day at work;when I get into a tiff with the hubby; when I have only gotten 2 hours of sleep and need an energy boost; when I feel content and have no worries;when I just need a good sweat; when I want to see the sunrise over the lake or the leaves change on the trees;when the snows sticks on the ground for the first time;when its pouring rain and eerily quiet; whenever I feel like it.
After accomplishing my goal of completing the couch to 5k program, I did my first 5k. After that, a turkey trot that was 5 miles. Half marathon training began in 2011. After training for 6 weeks and building up to a solid 7 miles, I injured my knee. Physical therapy was for 4 weeks and then a 8 weeks on my own at home. With already signing up for the Cleveland half, race day came. I was not prepared for how sad I felt. I cried off and on all day. Then I knew, I was a runner. The next day I picked myself up and planned for a “re-do” 2012. I am happy to report that this year I did 3 half marathons! My goal for 2013 is more half marathons and the “big one” 26.2 miles and if I have it in me, maybe even a tri. Follow me as I conquer this goal. Happy Running!
